Llevo un tiempo pensando en sustituir mi antiguo laboratorio para VMware y creo que he encontrado una solución bastante aceptable. Había valorado varias opciones tipo HP Proliant Microserver G8 (en HCL de VMware), Intel NUC o White Boxes (PCs hechos a medida fuera de HCL y con drivers de la comunidad de VMware), sin embargo, encontré un servidor de Dell de la gama de minitorres que por características y precio no tiene competidor … Dell PowerEdge T20 – 3729. Destacando un procesador Intel Xeon E3-1225 v3, ampliable hasta 32 GB de RAM tanto ECC como no-ECC, posibilidad de incorporar hasta seis discos internos SATA.
Y buscando precios en internet lo encontré en la tienda paratupc.es
Le he hecho una ampliación de RAM con dos módulos de 8 GB Ballistix BLS2CP8G3D1609DS1S00CEU comprado por Amazon:
Este servidor se puede ampliar hasta 32 GB de RAM. En mi caso me he decantado por RAM tipo no ECC exclusivamente por el precio dentro de las que son de bajo consumo ya que al ser un servidor dedicado a laboratorio no me preocupa la protección ECC.
También he realizado una ampliación de red, con una tarjeta dual ethernet en matriz HCL con ESXi 6.0, INTEL PRO/1000 PT:
La instalación la he realizado vía USB con la iso proporcionada por DELL( Dell Customized Image of VMware ESXi 6.0). Aunque este servidor no está en HCL de ESXi 6.0, contiene todos los drivers necesarios para el servidor sin necesidad de hacer ninguna customización de la comunidad.
He añadido el vSphere Host Client web tan esperado para los que tenemos en el PC un Sistema Operativo no Windows. La instalación se hace rápidamente desde una sesión ssh:

Tema interesante a mencionar es la posibilidad de la gestión remota del servidor vía VNC que posibilita la tecnología AMT de Intel, proporcionando un equivalente de la ILO en los servidores de HP. Para configurarlo he realizado este post con los detalles.

- He completado la RAM a 32 GB usando los cuatro módulos iguales 8 GB Ballistix BLS2CP8G3D1609DS1S00CEU.
